Ben Garrod, a professor of evolutionary biology and science engagement, has said that people are not aware of the proper processes for nurturing monkeys as “they are not domestic animals”.
And under the wrong care, he says, monkeys kept as pets could “be d.e a.d within two years”. He called for better regulations to be introduced to prevent people from buying the pets, adding that it was easy to do so online. Nonetheless, several celebrities have jumped on the trend over the years. Here are just some of them:
1. Justin Bieber
Mally, JB’s young monkey, was seized by German customs on 28 March when Bieber, 19, failed to produce required vaccination and import papers after landing in Munich while on tour. It was quarantined and cared for at the city’s animal shelter. A spokesperson from the shelter said “He still has issues speaking the Capuchin language. He still tries to imitate human speech. He sometimes makes weird scratchy sounds which are not typical for Capuchins. That’s why we think he still tries to talk to humans.”
2. French Montana
Bad Boy rapper French Montana had a wild night and bought a baby Capuchin monkey. He shared photos of his new pet “Julius Ceasor” on Instagram, and admitted that he bought the adorable animal after a night of getting h.ig.h, writing “This **** funny when I get high and see I really got a monkey lol.”
3. Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley bought a spider monkey named Jayhew, who lived in a cage at 1034 Audubon in Memphis in 1985. Fast-forward five years, to the fall of 1961, and Elvis adopted a new pet. It was a chimpanzee named Scatter. Most sites make scant mention of how he came to join the Presley family, but it turns out the ape was originally part of a local, Saturday morning TV show in Memphis hosted by “Cap’n Bill” Killebrew. Sponsored by Hart’s Bread, Killebrew decided he wanted to have one less chimp on the program, and somehow Presley friend Alan Fortas got Elvis to take him.
4. Chris Brown
Chris Brown gave his daughter a capuchin monkey as a present for Christmas. But authorities soon discovered the Grammy winner didn’t have a valid permit, and the primate was taken away.
5. 4Jay and Curtis
4Jay and monkey Curtis are social media stars who post weekly videos together on their YouTube channel. Most of the videos show baby Curtis in his daily routine, or accompanying his companion for bites to eat.
