We are spotlighting a dog that not only showed his loyalty, but also his sharp instincts, when his elderly owner found herself in need of help.
On July 10, 2020 Johnson, 88, walked out the front door of her Glendale, Calif. home, and tripped. She f.e.ll to the ground, unable to get up and call for h.e.lp. As Johnson la.id on the floor, she was able to spot a man, Kirk White of Glendale Integrated Waste Management, walking up her driveway pulling in her trash cans.
And that’s when Sandy, an 11-year-old rescue dog, came to the rescue her.
“When I saw him, I said to Sandy, ‘You go get him,’ so he did,” Johnson said.
Glendale sanitation worker Kirk White thought something was a.miss when Sandy along his route, was not in his usual place.
“The way he was barking and he would look to the left like I have something to show you,” White explained.
Sandy led White around to the back of the house where Gwendola Morgan Johnson was sp.raw.led out on the ground beneath the blazing sun.
Johnson saw White pulling up her cans like he normally does, however, he was not able to see her.
Surveillance video shows the barking dog approach White, then take him to Johnson. White then helped Johnson to her feet and made sure she was not in.ju.red.
“I know it was very hot that Friday… seeing someone in the sun, that wasn’t right at all,” White said. “(I was) just helping another human, that’s what we’re supposed to do.”
Sandy’s loyalty and intelligence now has White thinking about getting a dog. And if he’s lucky it will be a dog like Sandy: loyal and smart enough to get help when his owner needed him most.
“We can learn something from animals,” he said.
