Cute and fluffy animals usually hog all the limelight. But, in this picture gallery we feature some of the planet’s w.e.ir.d and o.d.d-looking creatures which are forgotten.
1. The blobfish
The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus), a species that lives at great depths and is rarely seen but resembles a marine Jabba the Hut, has been voted the world’s u.g.li.est animal. It inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of the Australian mainland and Tasmania.
2. The Titicaca water frog
The Titicaca water frog, named after the South American lake where it lives, has also been dubbed the ‘aquatic sc.ro.tum frog’.
Aye-ayes are critically en.d.ang.ered and can only be found on the island of Madagascar.
4. The flightless d.u n.g beetle
The flightless d.u n.g beetle can rolls massive balls of poo in straight lines, walking backwards and navigating by the stars.
5. The Monkfish
The Monkfish is a bottom-dwelling fish that lives in the western Atlantic.
6. The Roti Island snake necked turtle
The Roti Island snake necked turtle has a neck as long as its body.
7. N.ak.ed mole rats
N.ak.ed mole rats live in communities with several dozen rats. The colony is led by one rat queen; she is the only female in the group that breeds.
8. The proboscis monkey
The proboscis monkey has an enormous nose that might be used to help attract a mate, or to make loud honking calls.
Hagfish can produce gallons of snot from their skin in a matter of minutes. This snot will clog the mouth of anything that tries to eat it.
10. Californian condors
At one point there were only eight Californian condors left alive. Breeding programs are helping them, but they are still s.eri.ously en.d.ang.ered.
